Carbohydrates such as cellulose and non-starch polysaccharides (including pectin, inulin) serve diverse physiological functions in the digestive system of animals. According to their primary functions, they are classified as fiber carriers, dietary fibers, or prebiotics.

Due to their complex fiber fractionation, fruit and vegetable residues have been increasingly incorporated into feed formulations for sows, piglets, calves, horses, and pets.
